Onwards & Upwards by Arabella Weir

41M6EX201CL._SL500_AA240_ I picked up a copy of this book in a charity shop a while back for 50p, having only ever read 1/2 of "Does my bum look big in this" by the same author i wasn't expecting a great read. DMBLBIT was funny - but the main characters neurotic ramblings got on my nerves and in the end I just couldn't be bothered to finish it.  But this book  was 100% better - it was funny, interesting, heartfelt and used the word Fanny far to many times ;)

The main 3 characters are Bert, Tess and Vicky - all different but fit together like misshapen jigsaw puzzle parts.  Each one complementing the other.  It starts with Bert (Albertine) starting secondary school and finding 3 good friends, she progresses through a good hundred and sixty pages skipping school, arguing with her mother, loosing her virginity, sleeping around and falling pregnant.  The book then skips to Tess and her self discovery of why she doesn't want to snog/bonk like Bert and Vicky and what she wants to do with her life.  Vicky finishes the book by becoming a mother and a wife to someone she doesn't really truly love, she trades her successful life to become a Stepford wife.  By the end of the book Vicky has regained her friendship with her other 2 best friends and steps down slightly from her pedestal.

I would recommend this book and think Arabella has done a damn good job, I'll look out for more books by her and may even skip the charity shop and go straight to an actual bookshop :oD.
